Explore Flores, Return to Where You Started

Embark on an immersive 4-day round-trip journey starting and ending in Labuan Bajo, discovering the authentic heart of Flores. On this route to Bajawa, you will marvel at the unique spiderweb rice fields in Cancar, explore ancient megalithic villages like Bena, and walk through peaceful countryside trails surrounded by lush highlands.

Along the way, immerse yourself in local culture, visit vibrant traditional markets, and rejuvenate your body in the soothing volcanic waters of Malanage Hot Springs. This seamless overland loop offers a perfect mix of cultural heritage, scenic nature, and relaxing adventure before returning you safely to Labuan Bajo.

ITINERARY

Day 1 | Labuan Bajo - Ruteng

Your Flores journey begins with a pickup from your hotel or another agreed meeting point in Labuan Bajo. From here, we drive inland toward Ruteng, passing through beautiful mountain scenery and rural landscapes.
Our first stop is Cancar, where you can see the famous spiderweb-shaped rice fields. Known locally as Lingko, these unique fields reflect the traditional land-management system of the Manggarai people. From the viewpoint, you can admire the distinctive pattern of the rice fields surrounded by green hills and local villages.
We continue to Ruteng and visit its traditional market, one of the largest and busiest local markets in the area. The market is an important place for the surrounding communities to buy and sell daily necessities, fresh produce, vegetables, meat, spices, and other local products. It is also a great opportunity to observe everyday life in Ruteng.
After exploring the market, we continue to your hotel in Ruteng. Check in, relax, and enjoy a comfortable evening before continuing the journey the following day.

Day 2 | Ruteng - Bajawa

After breakfast, we check out and continue our journey toward Bajawa, traveling through the scenic highlands of central Flores.
Our first stop is Aimere, an area well known for its traditional production of sopi, a locally produced palm spirit. Here, you can learn about the traditional distillation process and see how local communities use palm products as part of their daily life and culture.
We then continue to Malanage, where two rivers with different water temperatures meet. The combination creates a unique natural hot-water area where you can relax and enjoy the surrounding tropical landscape. It is a peaceful place to take a break from the journey and experience one of Flores’ lesser-known natural attractions.
In the afternoon, we head to Wolobobo Hill, one of the scenic viewpoints around Bajawa. The area offers expansive views of the surrounding mountains and countryside and is a beautiful place to enjoy the sunset.
After sunset, we continue to Bajawa for hotel check-in and an overnight stay.

Day 3 | Bajawa - Ruteng

After breakfast, we begin our journey back toward Ruteng, with visits to one of Flores’ most remarkable traditional villages and a beautiful mountain lake.
Our main cultural visit of the day is Bena Traditional Village, one of the best-known traditional villages of the Ngada people. The village is characterized by its traditional houses, bamboo structures, thatched roofs, ancestral shrines, and megalithic monuments. Walking through Bena provides an opportunity to learn about the traditions, architecture, beliefs, and community life of the Ngada people.
We continue our journey toward Ruteng and stop at Ranamese Lake, a beautiful lake surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. The cool mountain atmosphere, dense vegetation, and peaceful lake create a refreshing natural environment. This is an ideal place to take a short break, enjoy the scenery, and experience the tropical highland landscape of Flores.
After visiting Ranamese Lake, we continue to Ruteng for hotel check-in and a relaxing evening.

Day 4 | Ruteng - Labuan Bajo

After breakfast, we check out and begin the final day of the journey.
Before returning to Labuan Bajo, we explore Golorenda on foot. This walking experience takes you into the countryside, where you can observe authentic rural life, local farms, plantations, village activities, and the surrounding natural landscape.
Walking through the area allows you to experience Flores at a slower pace and interact more closely with the local environment and community.
After the walking experience, we continue by road to Labuan Bajo. Upon arrival, the four-day Flores roundtrip comes to an end.

Roberto drove us from our hotel in Ruteng to the Ruteng Walking Tour, which starts 20 minutes north-east of Ruteng. Roberto was so kind and welcoming, and we had many great conversations about Manggarai culture.

Caci fighting dance ceremony was being hosted in Ruteng the day after our walking tour, and so Roberto kindly invited us to join him and his family at the Caci ceremony. The Caci was amazing to see, and it was so lovely to meet more of Roberto's family and village, have lunch with them and play football together. Thank you for such a special and memorable time in Ruteng - we will always remember our time with you and your family.

Firstly, we booked with Filan, who was very kind and relaxed and helped us plan a great trip. I'd give 5 stars to him alone, but he put us with our driver, Roberto who was simply incredible! He really made the trip for us.

Roberto was so very kind and attentive and safe. He took incredible care of us, showing us some of the best photo spots, restaurants, and other attractions, teaching us about the local culture and things we were seeing, even finding us cold Bintangs when we felt the thirst. He was always on time, always driving very safely on Flores' challenging roads, always considerate and did all we asked of him and more. Truly, I cannot say enough good about this man! 5 stars for Roberto are not enough!
